Chapter 11

That night was the first night Vance and I spent in our new home. As I looked around the partially unfurnished house, I felt a pang of homesickness for our apartment, which was silly. I had never been particularly fond of the place, but still, it had been ours. I pushed the feeling aside, determined to make this house our home. I wondered if I should ask my friend, Honor, to enchant our home like she had done for her sister. Honor’s magic created a warm, cozy atmosphere that made you feel instantly at ease. It was something I could use in this new, unfamiliar space. I made a mental note to call her tomorrow to see if she could help.

Seeing as the living room was mostly furnished, I planned on pulling out a blanket and curling up on the couch with my computer to research Sarah Vanhaven while Vance finished replacing the last fallen tile on the backsplash. I’d just found my favorite fleece blanket when we heard a loud crash from the upstairs bathroom.

"What was that?" I asked, feeling a jolt of adrenaline.

Vance didn't say anything as he quickly ascended the stairs, and I followed close behind. When we got to the bathroom, we saw one of the bathroom shelves lying on the ground, surrounded by a mess of my lotions and soaps. The second shelf hung at an angle with its screws pulled out of the drywall. The shelves had been mounted to the wall above the sink. The large mirror above the sink was still intact.

"That's weird," Vance said, removing the remaining shelf and examining the wall where it had been attached.

"Do you think it was because of the tile falling earlier? Something faulty with the adhesive?” I asked, trying to come up with a logical explanation. “Maybe Gayle did a couple of projects around the house before listing the house for sale, and things didn’t hold as she’d expected?’

Vance shook his head. "I don't think so. This was attached with screws, not adhesive."

“Hmmm. It must just be a fluke," I said, trying to brush off the uneasy feeling creeping up my spine.

“I don’t know. It’s odd.”

We looked around the bathroom, but nothing else seemed out of place. Neither of us wanted to say anything, but I knew we were thinking it—something wasn't quite right in our new home.

Needless to say, I had difficulty settling in for the night. Thankfully, I had plenty of other thoughts to occupy my mind, starting with Sarah Vanhaven.

“Do you want me to start searching the legal databases?” Vance offered from his side of the bed. We were tucked in for the night.

“Sure, why don’t you do that, and I’ll scour social media?”

Vance nodded and pulled out his laptop. I opened my phone and began my search. It wasn't long before I found a Facebook page for a woman who shared Sarah’s last name. I clicked on it and started scrolling through her posts. Most were pictures of her kids and pets, but one post caught my eye.
